The Basic Fuel Cost Formula
Where:
- Distance = Total kilometers to be traveled
- Mileage = Your truck's fuel efficiency in km per liter (km/L)
- Fuel Price = Current diesel price per liter in your city
Example 1: Simple Trip Calculation
Delhi to Jaipur Delivery
Given:
- Distance: 280 km
- Truck mileage: 6 km/L
- Diesel price in Delhi: ₹94.72/L (March 2026)
Calculation:
Fuel cost = 46.67 L × ₹94.72 = ₹4,419
Answer: Fuel cost for Delhi-Jaipur trip = ₹4,419
Example 2: Round Trip Calculation
Mumbai to Pune Round Trip
Given:
- One-way distance: 148 km
- Round trip distance: 148 × 2 = 296 km
- Truck mileage: 5.5 km/L
- Diesel price in Mumbai: ₹102.63/L
Calculation:
Fuel cost = 53.82 L × ₹102.63 = ₹5,524
Answer: Round trip fuel cost = ₹5,524
Example 3: Monthly Fuel Cost Calculation
Single Truck Monthly Expenses
Given:
- Average daily distance: 220 km
- Working days per month: 26 days
- Monthly distance: 220 × 26 = 5,720 km
- Truck mileage: 6.2 km/L
- Average diesel price: ₹96.50/L
Calculation:
Monthly fuel cost = 922.58 L × ₹96.50 = ₹89,029
Answer: Monthly fuel cost for one truck = ₹89,029
Annual fuel cost = ₹89,029 × 12 = ₹10,68,348
Example 4: Cost Per Kilometer Calculation
Finding Your Per-KM Fuel Cost
This is useful for pricing trips and comparing different vehicles.
Given:
- Truck mileage: 5.8 km/L
- Diesel price: ₹98.40/L
Formula:
Cost per km = ₹98.40 ÷ 5.8 km/L = ₹16.97/km
Answer: Fuel cost is ₹16.97 for every kilometer driven
For a 500 km trip: 500 × ₹16.97 = ₹8,485
Example 5: Fleet Fuel Cost (Multiple Vehicles)
15-Vehicle Fleet Monthly Cost
| Vehicle Type | Count | Avg km/day | Mileage | Monthly Fuel Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCV (Chota Hathi) | 5 | 180 km | 8 km/L | ₹2,76,975 |
| MCV (Tata 1109) | 7 | 240 km | 6 km/L | ₹5,36,928 |
| HCV (Eicher 25T) | 3 | 320 km | 5 km/L | ₹2,99,520 |
| TOTAL MONTHLY FUEL COST | ₹11,13,423 | |||
Calculation for LCV:
Fuel per LCV = 4,680 ÷ 8 km/L = 585 liters
Cost per LCV = 585 L × ₹95/L = ₹55,575
Total for 5 LCVs = ₹55,575 × 5 = ₹2,77,875
Annual fleet fuel cost = ₹11,13,423 × 12 = ₹1.34 crore
Quick Reference: Fuel Cost by Distance
At average mileage of 6 km/L and diesel at ₹96/L:
| Distance | Fuel Needed | Fuel Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 100 km | 16.67 L | ₹1,600 |
| 200 km | 33.33 L | ₹3,200 |
| 500 km | 83.33 L | ₹8,000 |
| 1,000 km | 166.67 L | ₹16,000 |
| 2,000 km | 333.33 L | ₹32,000 |
Current Diesel Prices (March 2026)
| City | Price per Liter |
|---|---|
| Mumbai | ₹102.63 |
| Delhi | ₹94.72 |
| Bangalore | ₹95.23 |
| Chennai | ₹100.75 |
| Kolkata | ₹97.61 |
| Hyderabad | ₹103.19 |
| Ahmedabad | ₹97.24 |
| Pune | ₹100.23 |

How to Improve Your Mileage
Better mileage = lower fuel costs. Here's how different mileages affect costs:
| Mileage | Fuel Cost (1000 km) | Monthly Cost (5000 km) | Annual Savings vs 5 km/L |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 km/L | ₹19,200 | ₹96,000 | - |
| 5.5 km/L | ₹17,455 | ₹87,273 | ₹1,04,724 |
| 6 km/L | ₹16,000 | ₹80,000 | ₹1,92,000 |
| 6.5 km/L | ₹14,769 | ₹73,846 | ₹2,65,848 |
| 7 km/L | ₹13,714 | ₹68,571 | ₹3,29,148 |
Improving from 5 to 6 km/L saves ₹1.92 lakhs per year per truck!
